About the Artist

Michael E. Dorcas, Ph.D., is a visual artist and scientist whose work exists at the intersection of fine art and biological research. For decades, his life was defined by the rigorous observation required of a field biologist and professor specializing in herpetology, conducting ecological research throughout the United States and in regions including Borneo, Costa Rica, Australia, and Africa.

That scientific discipline now informs his artistic practice. With a deep understanding of animal anatomy, ecology, and natural history, Dorcas creates artwork that is both visually compelling and scientifically grounded. While his academic research focused on amphibians and reptiles, his artwork encompasses a broad range of wildlife, including mammals, birds, and fish.

Working primarily in colored pencil and graphite, he employs a meticulous layering process to capture the texture, depth, and luminous qualities of fur, feathers, skin, and scales. The resulting drawings are intimate portraits of wildlife—accurate, expressive, and deeply rooted in real-world observation.

Ultimately, his work is driven by a commitment to conservation through connection. By presenting animals with both scientific accuracy and artistic reverence, Tantilla Art encourages appreciation as a pathway to stewardship of the natural world.

What's in a name?

Tantilla is a genus of small, secretive snakes I’ve encountered many times in the field. Despite their size, they prey on formidably large centipedes—a reminder that beauty, resilience, and quiet power often come in subtle forms.

This animation is based on an original, fully hand-drawn artwork by Michael E. Dorcas. AI was used only to animate the finished drawing.

Artist Statement

Inspired by a lifelong connection to the natural world, my work operates at the intersection of empirical science and fine art. Years of scientific training and field research have shaped how I see—teaching me not only how animals look, but how they live, move, and interact with their environments.

I work primarily in colored pencil and graphite, media that allow for extraordinary control, depth, and detail. Through careful layering, I aim to convey the tactile and luminous qualities of fur, feathers, skin, and scales—inviting viewers into a closer, more contemplative encounter with each subject.

My goal is to create work that fosters conservation through connection. When we slow down and truly see the beauty and complexity of other species, appreciation follows—and with it, a deeper sense of responsibility to protect the biodiversity that sustains us all.

Artistic Process

All artworks presented and offered for sale through Tantilla Art are created entirely by hand by Michael E. Dorcas using traditional media (graphite and colored pencil). No AI image-generation tools or digital creation software are used in the making of the original artworks.

In select cases, finished drawings are adapted into short animations using AI-assisted tools after the artwork is complete and are used solely for web display.

The original artworks, prints, and editions remain fully hand-crafted, traditional works.
