Aldabra: a Aldabra Giant Tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea) graphite wildlife artwork by Michael E. Dorcas, Tantilla Art.

About the Aldabra Giant Tortoise Drawing

I have never seen Aldabra Giant Tortoises in the wild, but I came to know them well as a teenage zoo volunteer. When I was fifteen and working at the Fort Worth Zoo, one of my tasks was refilling their food pans with lots of veggies. Before I could do that, however, I sometimes had to persuade these immense animals to move (they liked to sit on their empty food pans). I remember trying to push them off the pans while they just sort of looked at me, regarding me with complete calm and quiet indifference.

Those early encounters gave me a lasting appreciation for Aldabra Giant Tortoises. Their immense size and longevity give them an almost ancient, monumental presence, yet their faces and eyes can convey a distinct sense of individuality. Their massive forelegs, heavily scaled skin, deeply folded necks, and broad shells also make them extraordinary subjects for graphite.

In Aldabra, I focused on the animal’s weight, texture, and quiet presence. The close composition emphasizes the powerful foreleg, weathered head and neck, and direct gaze, while the immense shell rises behind the tortoise and frames the portrait.

Aldabra is a graphite wildlife drawing of an Aldabra Giant Tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea) by Michael E. Dorcas for Tantilla Art.
