About the Great Blue Heron Drawing
I have seen Great Blue Herons throughout my life in ponds, lakes, rivers, marshes, estuaries, and other aquatic habitats. Even after so many encounters, they never seem ordinary. Their immense size, deliberate movements, and elegant proportions give them a commanding presence wherever they appear.
Great Blue Herons often hunt by standing nearly motionless or wading slowly through shallow water while watching for prey. That patient stillness can be deceptive. When a fish, frog, snake, or other small animal comes within range, the heron can extend its long neck and strike with remarkable speed and precision.
In Blue Vigil, I portrayed the heron standing upright on a weathered branch, alert but composed as it watches the surrounding landscape. The long legs and toes anchor the bird to the perch, while the dagger-like bill, focused eye, sweeping breast plumes, and layered wing feathers create a balance of strength and elegance. The title reflects both the bird’s blue-gray plumage and the quiet vigilance that defines so many encounters with this species.
