About the Spectacled Caiman Drawing

I have seen and captured many Spectacled Caimans (Caiman crocodilus) in Costa Rica, usually at night by spotting the bright reflection of their eyes above the water. Those nighttime searches were always a lot of fun and often became family adventures. All three of my children have joined in, hand-grabbing small caimans from the front of the boat for a quick photograph before release. They are feisty little crocodilians, and when a four-footer ends up in the boat, things can become exciting in a hurry.

Spectacled Caimans are among the most widespread crocodilians in the New World and are especially well suited to quiet tropical waters, marshes, and river edges. At night, they often reveal themselves only through eye shine and the slight outline of the head breaking the surface. That combination of concealment and sudden visibility makes them especially memorable animals to encounter.

In Nocturnal Reflections, I wanted to capture that moment of discovery: the animal almost hidden in darkness, betrayed only by its watchful eye and its reflection in still water. The composition reduces the caiman to its essential presence – eye, texture, waterline, and mirrored image – emphasizing both its nocturnal habits and the quiet tension of seeing it before it disappears again.
